Fruit That Grows From Him
The Spirit produces real character in you over time
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.Galatians 5:22-23 (NKJV)
Observation
Paul chose the word fruit on purpose, and the choice tells you everything about how godly character actually forms. Fruit is not manufactured. Nobody bolts an apple onto a tree with tools and effort. Fruit grows out of the life already present in the root and the branch. Paul is telling you that love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are not a checklist you white-knuckle your way through. They are the natural output of the Spirit's life inside you, given time and connection to the source. This is a direct contrast to the list right before it in the same chapter, the works of the flesh, which Paul calls works because they are things people generate through effort and appetite. Fruit is the opposite of works. Works are produced. Fruit is grown. That single distinction should relieve pressure off of you today, because so much of the church culture around personal growth treats character like a performance metric: try harder to be more patient, force yourself to be kinder, grit your teeth into peace. Paul says none of that. He says stay connected to the Spirit, and the fruit shows up because that is what the Spirit produces wherever He has real access. Notice also the final line: against such there is no law. There is no rule that opposes love, joy, peace, or self-control. No legal system, no moral code, and no accuser can bring a case against a person actually walking in these things, because they fulfill every righteous demand without needing a rule to enforce them. This is the finished-work reality Kenneth Hagin taught: you are not earning righteousness through manufactured behavior. You already have the Spirit inside you as a believer, and that Spirit is already producing this fruit, sometimes slowly, sometimes in seasons you cannot see clearly, but always according to His own timeline rather than your anxious effort.
Application
Stop grading yourself today by how much fruit you can see right now. A tree does not panic in winter because the branches look bare; the life is still in the root, and the fruit comes in its season. If you are struggling with patience, gentleness, or self-control this week, that struggle is not proof the Spirit has failed you. It is proof you are in a growing season, and growing seasons are not glamorous while they are happening. Instead of trying to force a fruit into existence through raw willpower, focus your attention on staying connected to the Spirit: time in the Word, honest prayer, obedience in the small things you already know to do. The fruit follows the connection; it does not precede it. Pick one fruit from this list that you most need today, whether it is peace in an anxious situation, kindness toward someone who has been difficult, or self-control around a habit you are tired of losing to. Speak it plainly: the Spirit in me is producing this right now, and against it there is no law that can stop it or condemn me for still growing into it. That last part matters. Do not let any accusing voice, including your own inner critic, put you on trial for fruit that has not fully ripened yet. Paul already ruled there is no law against what the Spirit is growing in you, which means there is no legitimate accusation either. When you fail today in one of these areas, do not interpret the failure as proof the Spirit is absent. Interpret it as evidence you need more time near the root, not less. Return to Him rather than retreating from Him. The gardener does not abandon the tree because this year's fruit came in smaller than last year's. He tends it, waters it, and waits, and so does the Spirit with you, every single day you stay connected to Him.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You that Your Spirit inside me is already producing love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, even in the areas where I cannot see much fruit yet. I stop trying to manufacture character through sheer effort and choose instead to stay close to You, because the fruit grows out of connection, not performance. Silence every accusing voice that puts me on trial for still growing, since You have already said there is no law against what Your Spirit is producing in me. Give me patience with my own process today. Where I am struggling, remind me it is a season, not a verdict. Keep me near the root, and I trust You for the fruit, in the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen!
